Disfunk
John Gerard is the host of Leith FM's successful weekly show 'The Vinyl Club' which is now in it's 4th year. With his colleague James Carroll, both have gained a reputation as innovative DJ's and have support from the scenes top DJ's each week. After receiving some exposure under the guise of 'Disfunk', and having his track 'New Tip' played on Radio 1, Rob Da Bank stated If it weren't for pesky Radio 1 policies, I would sign this artist myself'.
His desire to produce has grown although limited between a hectic programming schedule for The Vinyl Club. His current sound is the result of mixing for the last ten years, starting after listening to mix tapes when running buses to gigs such as Hanger 13 and Resurrection. He explained: I used to run coaches to gigs and always had to have the best tapes to play. I would go out and have as many as a dozen blank tapes posted through my door with names of who they were for. Eventually I thought I must have a go myself.
His sound is a mix of hundreds of different influences from the sounds that got him into music: Initially I was listening to Pink Floyd when the acid house sound broke and swept me away with it. Acts like LFO, Hardcore Uproar and a big addiction to The Orb confirmed this as my choice of music. Also helping to influence him are his idol’s: My main heroes are Laurent Garnier & Sven Vath, I love so many other acts but these two have been at the top of their game for ages now.
This has helped him maintain an emphasis on the underground, allowing him to experiment with his music: I always try to start off slow and gradually pull the listener in, essentially attempting to go on a musical journey. This allows me to play anything from electronica to banging techno and still keep it relatively underground.
Already he has supported artists such as Ulrich Schnauss, Dave Angel and Samuel L Session, he also produces annual electronica mixes which have gained a cult following as well as his weekly show.
Diarrhoea Victim
Staggering and squelching the streets of London comes the sickness known as the Diarrhoea Victim to bring the noise of its fast-food related stomach complaints to the mix.
Causes: Irritation of the stomach lining by wobbly basslines
Symptoms: Stomping breaks and beats that will have you reaching for the nearest handy bit of bum rag in delight.
Treatment: In many cases, getting one's groove on whilst replacing lost alcohol levels will provide adequate relief
Kenneth has been responsible in orchestrating a number of cutting edge club nights and live electronic events in Scotland since the early 2000's.
As a DJ he pushed new school breaks to the forefront for many years but as time passed changes came and Kenneth took a shift in direction through electro and minimal to his current position pumping out techno and dancefloor oddities.
With tracks and live sets currently in production he is taking time out from the club scene to concentrate on his own sound, With his radio show RSI Radio on LeithFM he is still bringing us the best of the underground in the UK.
